This global COVID-19 pandemic has had an enormous impact on all the maritime industry, but it is you the seafarer who must not be forgotten. We hope you are all aware of the work that the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) together with IFSMA and other key non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) are putting in on your behalf to enable crew changes to take place. The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), supported by its affiliated unions, have been working closely with IFSMA to put pressure on Governments to start taking measures to ensure this happens to keep you, the seafarers, safe and for ships to trade safely around the world. To date, a relatively small number of steps have been taken by relatively few nations, since most are only concentrating on their internal domestic struggles against the global COVID-19 pandemic and are sometimes seemingly oblivious to your plight at sea. Since the pandemic was declared by WHO in February, many Governments and International Organisations rightly declared Force Majeure for keeping you at sea. IFSMA wishes to reiterate that it now considers this no longer appropriate. Shipmasters, their crews and all in authority in the Shipping Industry remain subject to normal contractual conditions in accordance with the ILO’s Maritime Labour Convention and all IMO Codes, Conventions, Rules and Regulations. Easing of Restrictions NOT being Extended Shipmasters share the responsibility of their ship owners and ship operator employers for the safety and welfare of their crew and for the protection of the marine environment and it is for this reason IFSMA writes personally to you today. The IMO has issued industry developed Crew Change Protocols for the guidance of nations. Despite many nations starting to ease lockdown restrictions, not all have been extended to facilitate crew changes; those that have been implemented have been driven by shipowners, crew managers and unions, with little help from nations. Notwithstanding that a recent small number of repatriations and crew changes are showing some signs of becoming easier, IFSMA is increasingly concerned that there is now clear potential for the wholly unwarranted criminalisation of the Shipmaster if a maritime incident takes place in which tiredness and the mental health of their officers and crew are subsequently found to have undermined the safe operation of their ship.

Your attention is also drawn to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974 Regulation 34-1 which clearly states:- “The owner, the charterer, the company operating the ship as defined in regulation IX/1, or any other person shall not prevent or restrict the master of the ship from taking or executing any decision which, in the master’s professional judgement, is necessary for the safety of life at sea and the protection of the marine environment” ISM Code/SMS/MLC The International Safety Management (ISM) Code also states that the Company should ensure that the Safety Management System (SMS) operating on board the ship contains a clear statement emphasising the master's authority. The Company should establish in the SMS that the master has the overriding authority and the responsibility to make decisions with respect to safety and pollution prevention and to request the Company's assistance as and when may be necessary. Finally, IFSMA draws your attention to MLC Regulation 5.1.5, On-board complaints procedures. If, despite your best efforts as master, you feel the safety of your ship and crew is compromised due to lack of support from the shipowner or other factors, because: 1. Your crew is significantly beyond their contract term 2. Your crew is fatigued 3. You are short handed 4. You are concerned about the safe operation of your ship 5. You do not have sufficient PPE including sanitisers/testing (etc) 6. You do not have access to appropriate supplies including medicines 7. You cannot get access to urgent medical and urgent dental services ashore 8. Your crew is not provided free wifi/internet contact with home 9. Your crew want to go home Then: You have a duty and responsibility to report this to the shipowner (whose name and address must be stated on your seafarers’ employment agreement and the MLC Certificate carried onboard). Put the interests of your crew first. If they are not being granted their full MLC entitlements, such as: repatriation, access to medical care, entitlement to nutritious food, water and other supplies, then register their complaints with the shipowner.

You need to do this for your own protection from possible criminalisation in the event of a maritime incident, and for the safety of your crew and others. In the event that the issues you raise are not satisfactorily resolved you are entitled to refuse to sail on entry into your next port. Enclosed with this letter is a list of some of the points you might also wish to consider including in any Report/Complaint to your DPA or Administration Take care and keep safe and remember that IFSMA, the ITF and your unions stand behind you and are here to give you full support. [Internet of Things Opportunities in 2020]
With technology advancement in all layers of IoT, from cloud computing to sensors and connectivity modules, to LTE and now 5G, the industry is poised with more opportunities than ever before. And with continued reduction in implementation cost, we are close to crossing the chasm to mainstream use, as the world sees more and more uptake from small and medium businesses, what are the opportunities on the horizon?
#Opportunity_One_Device_Enablement
Without device enablement, there will be no IoT. Rather than building an IoT device from scratch, some of the fastest growing startups in this space are building solutions which can enable all types of devices to connect with the internet, building the enablement layer means helping any smart device, machinery, or even household appliances to efficiently connect to the internet. Although the challenge lies in consolidating standards against big brands and country specific regulations, this layer is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 24% p.a and poised to be a US$ 30 billion market by 2023.
#Opportunity_Two_Cloud_Computing
It goes without saying that cloud computing has been one of the fastest growing spaces in the last decade. Companies like AWS/GCP/AZURE provide large data storage capacity and computing power to fuel sophisticated functionality, security, and analytics. The real opportunity here is to apply existing research data with cloud computing and IoT devices to provide results previously impossible to execute. Agriculture is currently at the frontier of these applications, by applying plant nutrition data from Ecology, Philips Lighting’s Growiser Center can monitor, track, and control the environment that influence a plant’s growth, however, manipulating the environment comes at a cost, but by leveraging IoT to optimize the environment whilst balancing the cost, Philips have managed to maximize yield profit and quality for their growers like never before.
#Opportunity_Three_Business_Applications
With steady advancement in technology and investment in the lower layers of IoT, the requirement to explore business applications has become much lower. However, due to the high financial opportunities, the business application layer will continue to be very fragmented. It is up to the founders to study, explore, and consolidate the possibilities that lie within the application layer, and to build something that businesses and individuals can truly benefit from to reap the rewards.

Hello Internet, my name is Ray, I'm a YouTuber from Taiwan, and this is an open letter to the World Health Organization.
Dear WHO, I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but a lot of your members have been voicing support for the inclusion of Taiwan in the WHO.
Since the novel coronavirus outbreak was designated as a global health emergency, core WHO members and their heads of state and officials, including Justin Trudeau, Shinzo Abe, 7 American senators, and the European Union (and more), have called on you to grant at the very least observer status to Taiwan. Having said that, I feel like as a Taiwanese citizen, it’s imperative that we also speak up for ourselves.
Disease knows no boundaries. Taiwan’s participation in the WHO is crucial not just to Taiwan but also to the world. A concerted, global effort is the only way to ensure the health and welfare of everyone. The coronavirus that began in Wuhan, China, has already spread to other regions and countries, excluding Taiwan could make it a "blind spot" in the international response to the disease.
Additionally, back in 2003, the SARS outbreak resulted in 73 lives taken in Taiwan. If we had been included in the WHO back then, we would’ve had better understanding of the virus and maybe, who knows, more lives could have been saved.
But we’re not just here playing the victim here, Taiwan can help. Taiwan’s healthcare system is lauded as among the best in the world, and our medical standards are generally on par with top global countries. The inclusion of Taiwan in world health assemblies and events would enable it to share its invaluable experiences in combating SARS, Ebola and other pandemics, helping countries around the world, including China. With our universal health coverage, health emergency response, and professional medical training, Taiwan can benefit the world.
Now you might say, Taiwan’s already represented by China in the WHO, but Taiwan’s geological separation and its independent disease control system and air traffic management provide further justification to why the WHO must take different approaches to Taiwan and China amid the coronavirus outbreak.
Also, given our proximity, Taiwan is at the very frontline battling this coronavirus from China, and we are skilled, determined, and equipped with past experiences combating different viruses. Excluding us is putting close to 24 million lives and the global population at risk.
As a Taiwanese, as a member of the global community, I am asking you on behalf of the world to include Taiwan. By allowing our participation in the WHO, you will be realizing the organization’s vision of health as a basic human right and health for all without exception. Thank you for your time.

此外,2003年爆發的SARS疫情,造成台灣失去了73條性命。如果我們當初有在世界衛生組織內,對於病毒就能有更深入的了解,而或許,就會有更多人因此得救了。
然而,我們並不是要博取同情,而是想讓世界知道台灣能幫上忙。台灣擁有全球最佳的健保制度,還有與其他先進國家並駕齊驅的醫療水準。如果讓台灣參與世界衛生組織,我們將有機會分享對抗SARS和其他流行疾病的寶貴經驗,進一步幫助世界各國,包括中國。透過我們的全民健康覆蓋、衛生應急響應,和專業的醫療訓練,台灣能幫助全世界。
